Chronological Age vs. Biological Age... How Old are You?

Charles Darwin wrote in The Origin of Species about essential “conditions”[of life]: “. . . The available nutrients actually determine how all living forms are able to develop”.  “If our species arrived in its present form by ‘millions of years’ response to nutritional forces then the sudden change in the last century or so to artificial and processed foods… wildly imbalanced nutritionally… is the most widespread experiment ever performed… with most of the human race as both experimenters and illness-ridden guinea pigs…

Let's look at Biological Age Vs. chronological age…

Gerontologists have been studying the complex relationship of diet, lifestyle, environment as well as activity patterns on both quantity and quality of life in animals and humans.

According to James Fries, M.D., a professor of preventive medicine at Stanford University Medical School, the protection of health reserves throughout the aging process is to a great extent a consequence of how each individual constructs his or her own health supportive environment and nutrition to maintain organ reserve, and resist disease as he or she ages. Fries points out that there may be a significant difference between chronological age and biological age or functional age, which measures health status.

Some people, for example, may be chronologically 60 years old, but have a biological age of a 40 year old. Conversely, there may be people who are in their 40s chronologically, but who function biologically like a 60 year old. Although there is nothing that people can do about their chronological age, Fries believes there is much to do to decrease biological age.

Individual control over the aging process was demonstrated in a 1998 article published in The New England Journal of Medicine by James Fries of Stanford University School of Medicine, Department of Preventive Medicine. This study evaluated 1740 University alumni over a period of 32 years. Variables examined include smoking, exercise patterns, and body mass index (waist to height ratio). It was found that the individuals with lower body mass index and healthier lifestyle habits lived an average of 6.7 years longer. More importantly, their health-span was also increased. They suffered from less disability and were ill a shorter period of time before undergoing natural death.

How can you know how well you are aging? The aging process is associated with a variety of changes in the body. By measuring and tracking these, biological aging is monitored. These measurable parameters, called bio-markers, can be assigned a biological age. According to researchers at Tufts University, the number one bio-markers of aging is muscle mass. Biological aging is associated with a loss of muscle mass. This phenomenon is referred to as Sarcopenia. Sarcopenia causes an overall weakening of the body. The Tufts researchers listed the top ten bio-markers of aging and singled out four (“The Decisive Tetrad”) as being most important. Following muscle mass, the number 2, 3, and 4 bio-markers of aging are strength, basal metabolic rate and body fat.

With the knowledge and products available today, individuals have no reason not to take advantage of the remarkable opportunities to reduce biological age. Some of these opportunities include eating fresh, high quality foods, consuming specific food concentrates and nutritional supplements, exercising, and using environmentally safe products that reduce the risk of toxic exposure.

Bio-Markers are biological aging measurements that determine your biological age - not your chronological age. Hence a scientific determination can be made as to whether an individual is aging well or badly!

Bio-markers are achieved through a number of clinical measures. These measures include simple ones such as skin thickness, hand and eye coordination, memory tests, speed of reaction etc., up through more complicated clinical processes such as bone density, calorie rate of metabolism etc., and finally blood, urine, saliva, skin and hair analysis, which measure the presence of hormones, nutrients, toxins, free radicals and antioxidants etc.

About the Biological Age Test (BAT)

Think about the people you know. Some of them look old for their years and some look and act much younger. Those who look, act, and feel young are biologically younger than their chronological age. Why is this?

Part of the answer is heredity, but far more influential is how people live their lives. Consider two identical automobiles that rolled off the assembly line thirty years ago. One of them is already in the junk yard while the other looks brand new and still runs great.

What we call aging is actually a combination of things, ranging from the genes your parents gave you to your lifestyle choices and general health history.

Bad habits can accelerate aging, damage your health and shorten your life. Wise life style choices can prolong your young and healthy years, keeping you strong, active and alert all the way to the century mark.

While scientists are just beginning to understand how to retard aging, there is a great deal that you can do right now to slow and actually reverse its effects.

So what about you? Are you younger or older than your years? This test will give you a good idea about whether you are headed for a drive to the beach or are off to the junk yard.

The good news is that no matter where you are, it is not too late to make a positive difference. In just twelve weeks on the Natural Life Program, you can undo a world of accumulated damage. In just three years, you can decrease your biological age dramatically!

CAVEAT: While based on actuarial data, the B.A.T. utilizes proprietary algorithms and exists only in a preliminary beta version. Thus, the results are only an approximation of actual biological age.

The system we use was developed by BIO|ANALOGICS’ Health Management Technology

... in 1986 and is used and evaluated in medical centers, clinical research studies, physician's offices, hospitals, preventive medicine clinics, government facilities and corporate wellness programs. In addition, major pharmaceutical companies have done rigorous due diligence on The Health Management System and ELG body composition technology with uniformly positive results.

This application [measurement of body fat and its ratio to lean body mass] is extremely valuable for physicians. George L. Blackburn, M.D., Ph.D., Director Nutrition and Medicine, Harvard Medical School System.

  1. Health Risk Analysis and patient screening to aid in the diagnosis and treatment decisions for patients with Hypertension, Diabetes, Coronary Disease, Osteoporosis, Arthritis and Obesity
  2. Individualized nutrition and exercise prescriptions with Basal Metabolic Rate and Caloric Requirements based on Lean Mass with the patented ELGII Body Composition Analyzer
  3. Precise monitoring of Fat versus Lean Mass allows for appropriate adjustments in both pharmacology and non-pharmacological treatment

The accurate calculation of percent body fat is the true definition of fitness and obesity

The accurate measurement of Lean Body Mass is now the most rational basis for nutritional and exercise prescriptions. The importance of clinical body composition is now being recognized.

Body Composition Technique :ElectroLipoGraphy (ELG) (This is what we use)

In 1985, the first validated algorithmic equations to interpret bioimpedance measurements were developed and patented by BIO|ANALOGICS. The use of the algorithmic equations instead of linear regression allows for population specific variables for lean, obese, elderly and pediatric subjects. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) conference on bio-impedance analysis (1994) concluded that to obtain valid predictions of percent body fat in humans, population specific equations must be applied.

The algorithmic equations developed and patented by BiO|ANALOGICS are population specific and validated on all types of subjects. The current validation studies contain more than 1000 subjects with an error factor of ±3.3% and a correlation coefficient of .88 compared to the criterion hydrostatic tank.

A total of five (5) to six (6) site measurements are entered into the algorithmic formula to increase the correlation coefficient to .91, and to reduce the standard error of estimate to ±2.8% compared to the hydrostatic tank. No other clinically available unit provides the Scientific accuracy, reliability and efficiency across a wide range of subjects. (Girandola et al 1990)

From this perspective of by ‘millions of years’ response to nutritional forces… and using the most concentrated nutrients available to determine how we… conscious human beings are now able to develop in this evolution of consciousness… this perspective changes everything… as new available nutrients… put back into an aging diseased body can bring it back to life and the body can get younger as it is restored back to it’s original state… more importantly the brain is able to handle more complex information and operate at a higher frequency as more of it is opened up to receive more information …

New research and development on stem Cells… now a nutritional supplement… may help to solve many of these problems… it has caused weight loss in a number of people… repaired cartilage and muscle… it has grown hair in some that need it and improved sex drive in others… we are talking about multiple products one simple source stem cells that are adaptogenic…

The Age Reversal Research Program consists of: 1. Balanced eating to optimize protein, fat and carbohydrate intake, 2. Eating frequency to space food out over multiple small meals, 3. Daily exercise, 4. Stimulant reduction, 5. Stress reduction, 6. Vitamin and mineral balance, and 7. Hormone balance. These 7 habits of healthy aging are focused on improving insulin metabolism, which can help balance other hormones and produce other desirable effects in the process.

After they follow a personalized program for about three months, individuals have another Age Test. Adherence to the program virtually guarantees improvement in the five bio-markers. You can reduce your biological age!
